A chartered legal executive is a qualified lawyer who specialises in a particular area of law. Some of the areas of specialization are family law, public law, corporate law, and civil and criminal litigation. They have at least five years of work experience working under the direction of a solicitor. Their work experience can either be a legal practice or by way of working in the legal department of a private company, a local or a national government.   • Attending client meetings where they explain and advise them on complex legal matters. In addition a chartered legal executive also interviews and advises witnesses on legal matters.
  • Corresponding with and on account of clients. A chartered legal executive is also responsible for negotiating on the client’s behalf.
  • Collecting, researching, analysing and summarizing the required information for the purpose of preparing legal documents.
  • Issuance of writs and tasking of summons.
  • Maintaining the accounts of a legal practice.
  • Advocating in the County and Magistrates’ courts.
  • For the swearing of legal documents, a chartered legal executive is also required to act as a commissioner for oaths.
  • Liaising with their counterparts from courts, legal practices, accountancy firms and banks.
  • Drafting wills and contracts for clients. Explaining beneficiaries the terms of wills, calculating the inheritance tax and working out the sum each beneficiary is entitled to.
  • Advising clients who wish to set up a new business on the legal aspects and preparing the required documents.
  • Assisting solicitors and barristers in presenting cases in court.
  • Assigning work to the junior staff and supervising them.
  • Preparing the required documents for the transfer of property.
  • Keeping abreast with the changing legislation and other legal aspects.
  • Filing and indexing of routine paperwork.
